Around the outer walls, the earthen floor is at ground level.  The central rectangular pit includes a fire ring.  The pit helps to retain the heat.  An opening in the roof above the pit lets in light and allows smoke to exit.  Air enters through gaps in the planks and the door.  The traditional Yurok plank house was practical and comfortable.
